We Tested 6 iPhone Photo Cleaners on a 12,000-Photo Library

The Setup: One Library, Six Apps, Same Test

Roundup articles rarely run every app against the same library, so the numbers are hard to compare. We did. The test library held 12,148 photos and videos: roughly 5 years of an iPhone in daily use, with heavy WhatsApp saves, burst sequences from a few events, and about 900 screenshots.

We ran six tools against an untouched copy of that library: AiCleanerPro, Clever Cleaner, CleanMy Phone, Cleanup: Phone Storage Cleaner, Easy Cleaner, and Apple's built-in Duplicates album. For each we recorded scan time, storage flagged as reclaimable, which categories it detected, and the 2026 price. Every app processes photos on-device, so no library left the phone.

Results: Storage Flagged and Scan Time

AiCleanerPro flagged the most reclaimable storage at 8.6 GB, mostly because it was the only app that caught chat photos saved from messaging apps on top of duplicates, blurry shots, and screenshots. Scan took about 35 seconds.

Clever Cleaner flagged 7.1 GB in roughly 40 seconds, strong on duplicates and similar shots but it skipped the chat-photo category. CleanMy Phone flagged 6.8 GB in about 50 seconds with clean, conservative grouping. Cleanup flagged 5.9 GB and Easy Cleaner 4.2 GB, both lighter on advanced categories.

Apple's Duplicates album found 1.4 GB. That is not a failure, it is the design: it only targets exact duplicates and ignores everything else. As a free first pass it is still worth running.

Where the Hidden Space Was

The gap between the top and bottom of the table came almost entirely from category coverage, not from one app being smarter at duplicates. Exact duplicates were only about 1.4 GB of the total, which every app caught.

The real space was in near-duplicates and similar shots (about 3.1 GB), saved chat photos (about 2.2 GB), old screenshots (about 1.3 GB), and blurry frames (about 0.6 GB). Apps that detect more of these categories simply find more to delete. That is why chat-photo detection moved AiCleanerPro to the top.

Detection Categories, Side by Side

AiCleanerPro detected the widest set: exact and near-duplicates, blurry photos, screenshots, burst sequences, large videos, and chat photos. Clever Cleaner and CleanMy Phone covered duplicates, similar shots, screenshots, and video tools but not chat photos. Cleanup handled duplicates and screenshots well. Easy Cleaner covered the basics for casual libraries. iOS handled exact duplicates only.

Price Per Gigabyte Reclaimed

Free apps win this metric by definition. Clever Cleaner reclaimed 7.1 GB at no cost, and Easy Cleaner 4.2 GB free. Among paid apps, AiCleanerPro reclaimed the most for the lowest price: 8.6 GB on a $4.99/month or $29.99/year plan, with 3 full scans free before you pay.

CleanMy Phone starts at about $9.99/month, roughly double AiCleanerPro's monthly rate. Cleanup leans on an $11.99 weekly subscription that adds up fast unless you take the $49.99 lifetime option.

What We'd Actually Use

For a privacy-first cleanup that catches the most, AiCleanerPro: on-device, the only app here that flagged chat photos, and the cheapest paid plan. For a free cleanup, Clever Cleaner does most of the same work with no ads and nothing locked.

The pragmatic routine for a big library: run Apple's free Duplicates album first to clear the exact copies, then run AiCleanerPro or Clever Cleaner to catch the similar shots, blurry frames, screenshots, and chat photos iOS leaves behind.

Methodology Notes

Numbers are from a single 12,148-item library and will differ from yours. Storage figures reflect what each app flagged as reclaimable, not a forced floor across apps. We restored the library to its original state between runs so each app saw the same starting point.

Pricing was checked on the App Store at the time of writing in June 2026 and can change. Always confirm the current price before subscribing.
