Wander — Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 13, 2026

Overview

Wander is a native iOS travel translator: it translates text and speech, reads menus and signs through the camera, explains what a dish or product is, and keeps a phrasebook. This policy explains what data the app handles. The short version: there are no accounts, no ads, and no tracking. Most work happens on your iPhone. A few features send the text you ask about to a cloud AI, and the app sends anonymous usage events so we can see which screens work.

Data We Do NOT Collect

  • No name, email, or user account
  • No advertising identifiers, and no ads
  • No device location (city weather uses the city you picked, not GPS)
  • No contacts
  • No photos are uploaded — camera images are read on the device (see below)
  • No audio recordings are stored or uploaded

What Stays on Your Device

  • Camera images (Lens). Text in a photo is recognized on the device with Apple's Vision framework. The photo itself is never sent anywhere. Recent scans are kept in the app's sandbox for the history screen and are deleted when you delete the app.
  • Speech (Conversation mode). Speech is turned into text with Apple's Speech framework. Apple may process speech on its servers under Apple's privacy policy; we never receive or store audio.
  • Translation. When your iPhone has the language pack, translation runs on the device with Apple's Translation framework. Pronunciation guides use Apple Intelligence on supported devices.
  • Your settings. Chosen city and languages, landing date, dietary avoid list, saved phrases, scan history, and the cached currency rate are stored only on your device.

What Is Sent to a Server

  • Text for translation and explanations. If your device cannot translate a pair on its own, or when you ask for an explanation card (what a dish is, allergens, spice, a tip), the recognized or typed text, the target language, the city you chose, and your dietary avoid list are sent to a cloud AI service operated through the Rork platform. The text is used to produce the answer and is not used to identify you. No images and no audio are sent.
  • Weather and currency. The app fetches the chosen city's weather from Open-Meteo and exchange rates from Frankfurter or open.er-api.com. These requests contain the city coordinates or currency codes, nothing about you.
  • Purchases. Wander Pro is sold through Apple in-app purchase and managed by RevenueCat. RevenueCat receives an anonymous app user ID and your purchase and subscription status so the app can unlock Pro. We never see your payment details.
  • Usage analytics. The app sends a small number of anonymous events to PostHog (for example: onboarding page reached, paywall shown, scan started, card shown, card shared) under the same anonymous app user ID. These are not linked to your identity and are used only to improve the app. No screen recordings, no session replay.

Tracking

Wander does not track you across apps or websites, does not use the advertising identifier, and does not share data with data brokers. Nothing collected is linked to your identity.

Permissions

  • Camera — to read menus and signs in the Lens.
  • Microphone and Speech Recognition — for Conversation mode.
  • Photos — only when you pick a photo yourself; Wander never scans your library.
  • Notifications — optional, one reminder on your landing day with your first phrases.

Each permission is asked for when the feature is first used and can be changed in iOS Settings.

Children's Privacy

Wander is rated 4+. Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it does not knowingly collect information from children.

Data Retention and Deletion

Everything stored on your device is removed when you delete the app. Cloud translation requests are transient. Purchase records at RevenueCat and anonymous analytics at PostHog are kept under a random app user ID that cannot be traced to you; if you want them deleted anyway, email us with the approximate purchase date and we will handle it.

Third-Party Services

  • Apple — Translation, Speech, Vision, Apple Intelligence, in-app purchase
  • Rork — cloud AI for translation fallback and explanation cards
  • RevenueCat — subscription management
  • PostHog — anonymous product analytics
  • Open-Meteo, Frankfurter, open.er-api.com — weather and exchange rates

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
